Assessment Criteria 1

1. This topic is of current national importance.

National Importance
Greater understanding of people who do not identify as either male or female would facilitate creating inclusive services and facilities.

Assessment Criteria 2

2. There is a need for data from a Census of the whole population.

For whole population
This is a small group of people which would be difficult to estimate accurately using surveys.

Assessment Criteria 3

3. The topic can be accurately collected in a form which the household completes themselves.

Easy to answer
As an expansion of the current question, which households already fill in themselves, this would not pose a need for further explanation.

Assessment Criteria 4

4. The topic would be acceptable to Census respondents.

Acceptable
The topic is acceptable to those that the ‘other’ category does not apply to as there is no change to how they can identify. It is particularly acceptable to those who identify as neither male nor female.

Assessment Criteria 5

5. The topic can be collected efficiently.

Collected efficiently
The topic can be collected efficiently as it is a minor expansion of an existing question.

Assessment Criteria 6

6. There is likely to be a continuing need for data on this topic in the following Census.

Continuing need
There will likely be a continued need for this data as there will always be people who identify as ‘other’.

Assessment Criteria 7

7. There are no other alternative data sources or solutions that could meet the topic need.

No alternatives
No known publicly available sources exist.
