Review of 2021 Census Topics

This submission suggests a further question that could be asked relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Opportunities to further understand indigenous cultures via Census questions should be explored. It is suggested that questions targeted at uncovering more detail about how people associate with being indigenous should be included. The following question is suggested: "Do you feel there are enough opportunities to engage in your culture in your local area?"

The answers to this question could assist in identifying gaps in cultural opportunities, and in planning and designing programs and opportunities to address those gaps.

Data about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples is required at local and broader geographic levels. This data could also be cross-correlated with a range of other data from the Census.

It is considered that it could be relatively easy to collect this data via the Census, particularly if the questions is provided in a yes/no format.

The proposed question may be considered intrusive, offensive or controversial by some people, but may be considered acceptable by others.

It is assumed that the data would be relatively easy to collect and process.

There is a need for time series data on this topic and it is likely to remain relevant, and even become more important in future - as more individuals identify as being Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.

It is not known by the authors of this submission whether or not comprehensive, continuous, spatially based data on this topic is collected via other sources.
