Assessment Criteria 1

1. This topic is of current national importance.

National Importance
As the option for PTW (power two wheeler - motorcycles) is currently missing from the census for travel to work single or multi mode - anyone/body using this data in support of transport development/planning or research will not get a true idea of the modes of transport used and as PTW use is on the increase year on year it is vital that it be included in the census to allow developers/planners/researchers to better understand how people are getting to/from work and for PTW to be included in their decisions.

The PTW community are often ignored in transport planning/development because of its omission in this census and others and needs to be addressed in order to make our roads/cities/rural areas safer for PTW users - as we have a disproportionate incident rate - if PTW use is to be encouraged for congestion/environmental reasons it need to be included nationally in any transport planning decisions.

Assessment Criteria 2

2. There is a need for data from a Census of the whole population.

For whole population
PTW use is on the increase year on year, but but we are also facing a disproportionate rise in PTW accidents, just because PTW use is relatively small (5%) we seem to get overlooked. More data on PTW available to transport planners/developers will lead to better decisions and safer roads - not just for PTW's but for all motorists.

Assessment Criteria 6

6. There is likely to be a continuing need for data on this topic in the following Census.

Continuing need
PTW use will continue to grow and if not included in the census will lead to poorer decisions being made that will affect this small community of people greatly.

With an expanding population and the increase in pressure on our roads, PTW usage data will be vital in future planning and development strategy's for congestion/pollution and road safety decisions.

Further comments
As a PTW user i find it hard to believe that in a national census we are overlooked as a minority form of transportation, leading i believe to poor transport planning/development decisions being made that adversely affect PTW users. There is no doubt in my mind that this leads to more accidents/incidents on our roads and is off-putting to new users.

At a time when our roads are getting more congested and our air quality is deteriorating from vehicle emissions, the use of PTW's should be encouraged and PTW use needs to be included in data to help facilitate a more accurate picture and to help future transport planning/development decisions.
