Topics on Transport

Choose one or more of the following topics that relates to your submission

If other please specify
Mode, time and duration of travel to care, education and work

Assessment Criteria 1

1. This topic is of current national importance.

National Importance
It is suggested that the questions relating to transport be amended to support the suggested changes to questions about location so that the data can be matched. Additional questions should be asked relating to:
• Mode of travel to childcare and/or preschool.
• Mode of travel to primary or secondary school.
• Mode of travel to tertiary institutions or other places of further education.
• Commencement time of travel for each purpose.
• Duration of travel for each purpose.
In addition, the response choices should be widened to allow for the combination of walking with other transport for journey to work/care/education. It would also be very useful to know the time/distance walked as part of journey to work/care/education from a health planning perspective and from a transport perspective. From a health perspective, this information could assist in understanding the obesity epidemic, particularly as it relates to children. From a transport perspective, this information could assist in understanding start and finish times and therefore reducing peak transport network loads.
Acknowledging ride-share as a mode/part of a multi-mode travel option would also be useful.
It would also be interesting to understand where and how frequently journey to work/care/education trips are combined – for example it would be useful to understand how a household setting out together for their daily journey in a car operates - to drop children at childcare and school, an older child or adult at a public transport station and the ultimate destination of any remaining passengers and the driver.
Also, from a spatial equity perspective, it would be useful to collect information on the direct road user charges (i.e. tolls) that people are paying as part of their journeys to work/care/education.

Assessment Criteria 2

2. There is a need for data from a Census of the whole population.

For whole population
Local and National data is important for spatial planning and understanding and for transport planning.

Assessment Criteria 3

3. The topic can be accurately collected in a form which the household completes themselves.

Easy to answer
It is considered that it would be relatively easy to collect this data via the Census.

Assessment Criteria 4

4. The topic would be acceptable to Census respondents.

Acceptable
It is suggested that some people could find travel related questions intrusive, offensive or controversial but that most people would probably accept the need to collect this type of data.

Assessment Criteria 5

5. The topic can be collected efficiently.

Collected efficiently
It is assumed that most of the suggested data could be relatively easy to collect and process.

Assessment Criteria 6

6. There is likely to be a continuing need for data on this topic in the following Census.

Continuing need
There is a need for time series data relating to regular individual and household travel and it is likely that this data will not only remain relevant, but also become more important, in the future.

Assessment Criteria 7

7. There are no other alternative data sources or solutions that could meet the topic need.

No alternatives
It is not known by the authors of this submission whether or not comprehensive, continuous, spatially based data on this topic is collected via other sources.
